How Healthy Is Much Better?

A dried-fruit gift basket is really a packaging and unit-cost problem dressed up as a nice idea. Get the ratio of fruit to filler wrong and the hamper looks cheap for the price; get the shelf life wrong and it's stale before the recipient opens it.

Filler ratio decides how the hamper actually looks

A basket built mostly of nuts and packaging with a token line of dates reads as padded. One built mostly of whole dates — Ajwa, Mariami, Safawi — with nuts as an accent reads as generous, and the per-unit cost isn't as far apart as people assume once you compare it gram for gram against a heavily packaged basket of small snack items.

Shelf life is the part sellers skip

Whole dried dates at the right moisture level hold for months at room temperature if kept sealed and out of direct heat. Nuts don't hold nearly as long once a basket is opened and exposed to air, so a basket built mostly of nuts has a shorter honest shelf life than the box implies. If you're assembling hampers ahead of a festive season rush, order the dates first — they're the forgiving ingredient — and time the nuts closer to the packing date.

Sizing a hamper for a corporate order

A standard 500g mixed hamper usually runs 250-300g of dates with the remainder in nuts and packaging weight. Scale that ratio up for larger corporate orders rather than diluting it further, or the hamper starts to look like mostly box. Our date safety and compliance guide covers what labelling a resold hamper needs if you're the one packing it, not just retailing loose dates.

Sourcing the dates for a hamper build

Green Diamond sells by grade in bulk, which is what a hamper business actually needs rather than a single retail-size box. Check our Medjool pricing guide before quoting a hamper price — Medjool's per-kg cost moves the whole hamper's margin more than any other ingredient in the box.
