Discover the Delightful Flavors of Kurma Safawi Malaysia

A Madinah date with a quiet sweetness

Safawi is grown mainly around Madinah in Saudi Arabia, the same area that produces Ajwa. The Kurma Safawi Malaysia buyers find in local shops is imported from there. Open a pack and the colour is the first thing you see: a dark brown so deep it looks black under shop lights.

Then you bite one. The flesh is thick and soft, with a good amount of fruit around the stone. The sweetness is moderate. It is noticeable without being sugary, and it does not leave your fingers tacky the way some very soft dates do. That restraint is the whole point of Safawi, and it is why people who find other dates too rich often settle on this one.

How it tastes next to Ajwa

Since both come from Madinah, the two names get swapped all the time. Put one of each on a plate and the difference is easy to see. Safawi is the fleshier, smoother and blacker of the pair. Ajwa is smaller, with more wrinkled skin. On the tongue, Safawi gives a plain, moderate sweetness. Ajwa is gentler and more aromatic.

Neither is the better date. Some people want Ajwa's softer perfume. Others prefer Safawi because it is meatier and easier to eat several of in one go.

What the grade changes, and what it does not

Safawi is graded mostly on size and how even the fruit is. Grade A is medium-sized with dense flesh. AA is bigger and more uniform. AAA Jumbo is the largest, with the thickest and softest flesh of the three.

So a higher grade does not taste of something new. You get more flesh per date and a softer bite. If you are buying for yourself, grade A gives you the same flavour for daily eating. Larger grades make more sense when looks matter, such as a guest tray or a gift box. Sellers who sort carefully can deliver dates that meet customers' size expectations, and that matters more than any label when every piece in a box should match.

Getting the most from the flavour

A mild date is easy to drown out, so pair it with something plain. A few ideas:

  • Eaten on its own with black coffee or tea without sugar.
  • Pitted, with an almond pressed inside, for visitors.
  • Chopped into plain yoghurt or oats.

Serve dates at room temperature. Straight from the fridge the flesh firms up and the sweetness feels flatter.

Keeping it soft after you open the pack

Safawi tastes best while the flesh is still soft. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun, and move it into an airtight container once the pack is open. The Safawi page linked at the top gives up to six months at room temperature and up to twelve in the fridge. If dates have dried out or crystallised, the texture will tell you before the taste does.

When ordering online, ask the seller for a photo of the actual batch. Plenty of date enthusiasts buy one small box first and only order a carton once they know they like it.

Comparing it with other dates

Tasting side by side is the quickest way to learn what you like. Try Safawi next to a Medjool, a large soft date from Palestine and Jordan, or read about locally grown kurma alongside imported ones. Our piece on fresh versus dried dates explains why the same variety can feel so different from one pack to the next.
