Medjool dates cost more per kilo than almost anything else in the dried fruit aisle, and that price only makes sense once you look at what a serving actually is — not the kilo price on the label.
What a serving really costs
A single Medjool piece weighs roughly 20-25 grams, most of it edible flesh once the seed is out. Raisins and cranberries are sold by the handful because each piece is tiny; a "serving" of either is 20-30 pieces to reach the same weight as two or three Medjool. Once you compare gram for gram rather than piece for piece, the price gap narrows a lot faster than it looks on the shelf.
Why one date can replace a handful
Dried apricot and raisins need volume to feel like a snack because each piece is small and mostly water once rehydrated in the mouth. A Medjool is dense enough that one or two pieces reads as a full snack, not a nibble. For anyone buying by the box for daily use rather than for a recipe, that changes how far a kilo actually goes.
Bulk buying versus small packs
Small retail packs carry a premium for the packaging and the convenience, same as anywhere else. A 1kg or 5kg box works out cheaper per piece, and Medjool holds up well enough in an airtight container that buying ahead of a busy month — Ramadan bazaars, a wholesale order, a household that snacks daily — isn't wasted stock the way it would be with a fruit that dries out fast.
Where the price actually goes
Grade explains most of the gap between one supplier's Medjool and another's — size, skin condition, and moisture level all move the price before origin does. A jumbo, unblemished piece from a good harvest costs more to sort and pack than a mixed-grade box, and that sorting labour is baked into the kilo price whether the label says so or not.
Our breakdown of Medjool pricing by grade goes through what you're actually paying for at each tier, and this guide to Malaysian date grading explains how graders sort a harvest before it ever reaches a shop shelf. If you're cooking rather than snacking, our piece on dates in Malaysian cooking covers which grade suits a recipe versus a lunchbox. And for something with a firmer bite than Medjool's soft flesh, demand for dates during festive seasons looks at the varieties that move fastest around Raya.
